The original, the BMS mud pants
Do I only need the mud pants / digging pants when it rains?
No, they are not just rain pants, but "protective clothing". Water games have become widespread in playgrounds. Whenever water is involved, digging trousers can also be useful. Wet children's clothing cools the body down unnoticed - this is known as the chill factor or wind chill factor. The water in the clothing evaporates in the wind and thus cools the clothing and the child's body. It is therefore always advisable to wear a waterproof protective layer when playing with water. Even in the early hours of the morning, when the grass and sand are still damp and cold, the use of digging pants makes sense. Here too, they prevent children from cooling down unnoticed. Who likes sitting in the wet or cold?
What is the right way to wear mud pants?
This is where opinions differ. Some people put their mud pants inside their wellies, others pull them over their boots. We at BMS recommend the version with the trousers on the outside. This has several advantages. Firstly, no water runs into the boots from above. It doesn't matter whether the water comes from the stream or the rain. Secondly, the heat does not build up in the rubber boots and your feet do not start to sweat. Thirdly, there are no pressure points on the calves and shins. The collar belongs under the rubber boot. The BMS rubber boots made of natural rubber have a special recess for the elastic band. This reduces wear on the collar.
What distinguishes BMS SoftSkin® from other materials?
BMS mud pants are made from SoftSkin® material. The material was developed in-house by BMS, making BMS mud pants unique. SoftSkin® is particularly soft, does not crease and is particularly hard-wearing. The material is characterized by a double-knit support fabric. This makes it elastic and pleasantly soft on the skin. The outer PU coating (recommended by Greenpeace) is slightly breathable and 100% PFC-free. It goes without saying that the material meets the strict criteria of Standard 100 by Oekotex Category 1.
Why is the bib of the mud pants / digging pants cut so high?
Form follows function. What are mud pants worth if they don't protect the child properly when playing? As described above, the pants are not only intended for use in the rain. Often mud pants are worn without a jacket. The dungarees are then simply pulled over the sweater or fleece jacket. The dungarees must then be cut high to protect the chest and stomach when playing with water. Imagine a child playing at the tap, well or a wheelbarrow full of water. How quickly the water then runs down into the trousers from above.
Why is PFC-free clothing so important?
PFC is the abbreviation for per- and polyfluorinated chemicals - also known as PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances) or PFT (perfluorinated surfactants). PFCs are used in many textiles due to their special properties - water, grease and dirt repellent as well as chemically and thermally stable. PFCs can enter the environment during their manufacture and during the manufacture of products containing PFCs. When these products are used and disposed of, they can also be released later in their life cycle. The use of fluorine-containing fire extinguishing foams also leads to increased concentrations of PFCs in the environment. The perfluorinated chemicals cannot be broken down in sewage treatment plants. Instead, additional perfluorinated chemicals are produced in sewage treatment plants through various conversion processes from the degradable precursor compounds (polyfluorinated chemicals). Water-soluble PFCs are distributed globally via rivers and oceans. These compounds are even found in remote areas such as the Arctic and the animals that live there. Humans absorb PFCs mainly through food or contaminated drinking water. Increased concentrations of PFCs in indoor air, for example through carpets with dirt-repellent finishes, also contribute to human exposure to PFCs.
Cotton lining in rain pants?
In general, rainwear should always be turned inside out when it is dried. Unfortunately, this is only theory. Especially in daycare centers, children hang up their rainwear as they take it off. Cotton absorbs and stores moisture and wetness. If the wet clothing is not dried completely, and also pulled to the left, germs and bacteria can settle and develop. Mold spores also collect in damp cotton. We therefore recommend using the onion principle. Furthermore, the cotton lining offers no added value. BMS SoftSkin® has a very comfortable and soft inside that can also be worn directly on the skin. It is comparable to nylon tights.
